The handles are primarily sculpted from apple or arbutus branches locally sourced in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Should you have a particular favored piece of wood from which you would like a handle made, feel free to send it to me.
Every handle is custom ordered. Generally they have a a ball on the top end of the lever, with an oblong shape to the wooden shank portion of the handle, with various slight dips meant to relieve pressure points as well as improve grip. The ergonomic shape facilitates a range of comfortable options for hand placement while tuning. You will have the option of co-designing your handle in order to take advantage of your particular hand size and tuning style. You can also forward me a sketch of your ideal handle shape and I will create it for you. The total length is entirely your preference, though I recommend 11 1/2" as being the most versatile.

The GoTu lever was invented by Doug Schmidt (https://douglasschmidt.ca) and engineer Ken Stokes with collaboration from Piano Technician Deborah McCann. Mechanical technologist Brendan Melin, from Access Precision Machine, contributed his brilliance in perfecting the final design. http://accessprecision.com
The intent was to achieve a 90 degree angle from the pin to the head while concurrently maintaining sufficient hammer clearance above the plate struts and/or upright lid overhang: all while striving to optimize tuning pin control. The lever has an initial bend of 45 degrees while moving away from the tuning tip, followed by a 43 degree bend in the opposite direction, producing a 2 degree deflection from the plane of the plate. This angle can be adjusted to personal preference. The GoTu Lever has a 10mm fine female thread which can readily accept a Jahn-style tuning tip. Male-to-female adapters can be provided as well, should you wish to use a 3/8 x 30TPI Hale style tuning tip. The lever is constructed from stainless steel, with a total weight of 195g or 6.87oz.
A case is included with your hammer or can be purchased separately. Cases hold the tuning hammer, mutes, and a few essential tools. The cases are narrow with rigid sides so that they can be placed on top of the piano so that you can create a tool-cradle for all of the tools being used. The case also includes a magnet flap fastener which can also serve to hold screws while you work. They are made in Canada by local seamstresses.
Hammers $525 CAD
Cases $55
For Canadian technicians who are members of PTG, CAPT or OGPT, payment is not required until you have used the hammer for a few days and are of the opinion that this tuning hammer is fantastic!
